The approximately eight centimetre tall clay figure is a depiction of the Egyptian goddess Isis and was found during excavations in Krefeld.

The woman depicted is sitting on a throne and has a child in her lap. "This depiction of the Egyptian deity is the model for our Mary with the Child Jesus," said Schletter.

Roman auxiliary troops were stationed in Krefeld from the year 70 AD onwards. The small relief belongs to a clay jug that was discovered in an ancient refuse pit. The jar could have been part of a household altar, said archaeologist Eric Sponville.

Other finds - including coins, urns, weapons and a horse skeleton - are on display at the Krefeld Archaeological Museum. During excavation work two years ago, 90,000 finds were discovered.

The camp was intended to protect the Roman border on the Rhine from the Germanic tribes. This section of the Limes, which also runs through North Rhine-Westphalia, could be included in the Unesco World Heritage List. In July 2021, the United Nations cultural organisation will decide on it.

Source: dpa [trsl.
