But do merisms have to be explicitly stated?

To me, the phrase 'in the beginning,' indicates an expanse of a something-I-know-not-what sort of 'time' to the time framework we exist in now.

I'm sure you are aware of St. Augustine's retort to people who inquired what God was doing before He created the universe. Those of us who believe in a beginning, seem to have a sense that there was a time before time, or a time before words like 'before' and 'after' and 'during' had any sort of meaning and the time when these do.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
- Jay EppingaJay Eppinganoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-688820610845171516.post-65997242253004895212015-02-27T03:55:27.011-08:002015-02-27T03:55:27.011-08:00Not every set of opposites is a binary set. Tall-short; talented-untalented are not binary sets because they are highly subjective.

Binary sets are universally and empirically observed. The Bible's assertions about reality are based on acute observation.

One entity in the set is regarded as superior to the other entity. Light is superior to night. In the beginning God said "let there be light..." "God is light." Evil deeds are described as the "works of darkness..."
Alice C. Do I have that right?

With regard to the binary "night and day," would it be safe to assume the day has the greater position in the hierarchy here, since when Christ's Kingdom comes it will always be day, and there will be no more night? Also, sleep, night and darkness in Scripture seem often to symbolize death and evil, whereas the day speaks of the light of Christ.ofgracehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15472912900056438243noreply@blogger.com
